Artist’s Statement:
The inspiration for this piece came first from Borromini’s architectural work, Perspective Colonnade. In this piece Borromini forces the eye to see the scene from a certain perspective and tricks the eye into thinking it is seeing into the distance while it is actually looking at a very short space. It was this idea of Trompe L’oeil that I was striving for. In my design, I placed a frame around the scene. This is meant to bound the subject and make the viewer believe that the image is constrained and not meant to overlap it. However, the ivy in the scene does overlap the frame, thereby blurring the lines between fantasy and reality.

The trellis subject comes from the Rococo idea of Arcadia. That is, a pastoral paradise. I wanted to create my own version of this perfect place. In the front yard of my childhood family home there was a similar trellis. When I think back to my childhood, it is always without flaws. Therefore, by representing a piece of that place as a part of my print, I am showing a small corner of my Arcadia.
